About This Course
Focus of study
In this course, you’ll learn important tips to follow—and cautions to heed—when writing titles, abstracts, tables, figures, and the Results section. These tips and cautions are based on our many years of experience in helping native and non-native speakers of English to write and publish medical papers.
- Abstracts and titles:
- Understand the 6 main features of titles and the 5 main features of abstracts, so that you can write each with authority
- Follow some practical tips for writing accurate, highly readable titles and abstracts, which often need to meet strict length restrictions
- Results section: In the 3 study units focusing on writing effective Results sections, learn how to concisely and accurately describe the following aspects of yours and others’ results.
- General direction of any change (eg, increase/decrease)
- Extent of such change, in terms of magnitude, duration, and frequency (eg, a marked/rapid/regular/linear increase)
- A comparison of various results obtained, using 3 clear writing strategies
- Figures and tables: In almost every research article published in the medical and healthcare literature, authors communicate their findings through a combination of words, numbers, and images. Learn how to
- Recognize the general writing conventions used for figures, tables, and call-outs
- Know how to avoid unintentional image manipulation, which is a violation of publications ethics
- Follow tips and cautions to enhance your written message by using effective figures and tables to visualize key points in your work and provide evidence to back up your claims

All study units are divided into short 10- to 15-minute segments to accommodate your busy schedule.
